 Hey guys,
   I rendered 60 frames out of a 90 frame animation using ScreamerNetII
before having to stop the render. The kooky part is I can't find any saved
images anywhere. My first thought was that I hadn't set the save function
but I checked the scene file in a text editor and the info was there. What
gives?

We use a patcher.p plugin that was specially written for us last summer. I
think a similar plugin is available now from the Newtek BBS/ftp site.

The basic idea is that you create your spline cage. Then, you select each
patch area, copy it to another layer, and give it a surface name (i.e. quad
1). Keep doing this until the entire cage is copied, with each patch
quadrant having it's own surface name. Splines will overlap, but that's OK.
The autopatcher works (atleast ours does) using a text file as the plugin's
argument. The text file lists, in order, the surface names and the settings
for knots/lengths.

The trick (and it's not so easy) is to set up the cage points and
accompanying text file so that the adjoining points between quadrants line
up point-for-point. This takes a bit of time and hair pulling, but it's
necessary if you want quadrants to patch seemlessly.

Once the patcher is finished, you'll need to kill the splines from the
object and merge points. If you complete these actions IN ORDER each time,
your point order will remain the same for each patched target. We then kill
all polygons, convert points to polys (not necessary), and save as a new
target object.

Hope this makes sense. A co-worker is supposed to be working on an article
for LW PRO outlining this process. He and his wife just had a beautiful baby
boy, so I'm not sure how soon this article will see the light of day.

I am trying to do the tutorials that are included with the Sparks
documentation.  I have mostly succeeded exept for one fundamental thing
that I can't figure out:

The Sparks manual, in several of the tutorials, asks you to load in a
"particle cloud" that you create in modeler.  It says that it needs the
cloud for "particle fodder."  That's all when and good, but what is it
supposed to do with this cloud?  My Sparks program does nothing with it.
The particle cloud just sits there.  I have to directly load in the
particle.lwo object that is included with Sparks package in order to get
anything to work.  I have set the number of particles to the correct number
and I have selected the correct object number as well.

I am using Sparks v2.176 and LW 4.0 for Amiga.

A couple of days ago, I posted a problem with tracking eyes to a figure
that was bent 'all outta shape' with bones and stuff durring an animation,
and I was wondering if anyone out there had suggestions to keep the eyes
tracking to the head object.  Well, The Jan 1996 issue of VTU has a
wonderfully complex and convololuted article on how to do just that.  They
take the example of Will Vinton Studios' M&M commercials.  As tricky as the
tutorial is to understand, its is a MUST, IMHO, for anyone interested in
using LW for character animation!

Kudos to VTU! (and the people who figured out how to bypass this particular
LW quandry)

You have discovered yet another of Screamernet's wonderful annoyances. Since
getting my Raptor 3's (and paying for them with blood, I assure you), I
haven't used Snet, but I did for a long time. Sometimes, the server just
decides not to save rendered images sent back to it. In my case it was an
A4000. On more than one occasion I would set up a rendering session, leave
for a few hours or even overnight, and come back only to find an empty
directory where there should have been a couple hundred frames! As I recall,
rebooting the Amiga cured the problem. One thing I learned from this: With
Snet, ALWAYS STICK AROUND TO SEE IF THE FIRST COUPLE FRAMES HAVE ACTUALLY
BEEN SAVED. The alternative can be disastrous.

Another thing from my Snet days: I had a few scenes in which an object or
two simply refused to render. The scenes were obviously correct, and frames
rendered on the Amiga didn't have this problem, so what the hell? After
banging my head over this one, I discovered that simply renaming the objects
cured the problem. I don't know why, but Snet just didn't like their
original names. Maybe you ran into that one and solved it already, but I
thought I'd mention it.

Hi Everybody,
     I have LW 4.0 intel running on a pentium 60 with 8 megs of ram
(Win 3.11 w/win32's). after I render a scene (saved with HIIP-avi16).
I exit and got to play it but there erro messages come up right after
each other.

"Video for Windows"
"MCIAVI requires a newer version of MSVIDEO.DLL, please reinstall your
video software"

"Media Player"
"There is a problem with the device driver. Check with the device
manufacturer about obtaining a new driver"

Could someone out there please help me.  I need to get these avi's
working.

    I ran into this as well, and had posted on it earlier.  One
behavior I haven't been able to workaround yet, is that when I get
up around 80k polys, rendering really gets screwed up.  I'm not
certain that it's the poly count that is the problem, but that's my
best guess.  Has anyone else run into this?  BTW, my problems are
on the original SNet.
    Andrew--You indicate that you are no longer using SNet.
What do you use instead?

 Hiya everyone --

I've got a problem the I'm wondering if anyone else out there has run up
against or has found a way around. This is that when I create a text
object in LW4 (Intel) usint eiter TT or PS fonts, it doesn't 'cut out'
the center part. This happens using any font-creation method. I have to
end up selecting the offending polygons, copy them to a new layer,
extruding them, and boolianing the origional letter shapes. Anyone have
any suggestions as far as how to get around this annoying problem?

Another problem has been plaguint me since I started using bones. If
create a cartoon character's head, and have the face squash and stretch
and emote using bones like all good cartoon characters faces should, I
can't have things like eyeballs and eyelids work properly. Its easy
enough to have an eyelid made out of a seperate object and parent it to
the head, but once I start deforming the head with bones, the eyelid
stays in one place while the head goes jouncing all over the place. I'm
stuck. help?

PS Type 1 fonts should work OK but TrueType fonts do what you noticed.
I pretty much did the same you did to get rid of them. Not sure if
NewTek will make TT fonts import a bit better.

     You're welcome. The only reason some of these are missing is
the upgrade going on. While it is complete within my system I
don't have enough online time to upload it in one day (the site
is getting BIG). Check back in a couple and all will be peachy!

ps. I'm going to have to remove the tip-to-tip browsing function
    as the maintence time for it is getting out of hand. Do you
    use it a lot? My thinking is that the index and search
    engine should be enough. I'm going to post this message to

  The Flyer... Clip Format? It's not on the short list, but I don't think
anything major prevents us from doing on machines that have Flyers.

Were you saving to a drive that only accepts names in the DOS 8.3 format?
If so, You have to make sure to not have more than 5 characters in your
save name if using three digit extensions or 4 if using the four digit.
Another way areound is to save the name with a period at the end (You may
have to type three periods in order for it to show up) so the digits
become the extension....

If that's not the case, make sure that the save path is mapped the same
for all machines.

  Why not set up a bone structure for the eyelid. Save the eyelid as a seperate object
and use bones to deform the eylids in the same direction as the otehr bones...it's a
pain but i think it's the way to go..unless you make them all one big object.

The best wway to have the best quality in overlay video is to render a
alpha animation in the same time: You transfer both alpha and normal
rendering to two different video tapes. Then, you use the alpha as the
"key window" and the normal rendering as the "fill in".

You can also do that over a zero black background. Then, your result can
be luminance keyed over any video later.

OK, if you have LWPro, check for the article on making heat waves or
something like that from the RoboCop series.

All you do is put a few low-intensity flares on top of each other.  They
add up to make a flare that is more intense and localized to one area.
Try two, render, and increase as needed.  That should do it for you...

My suggestion would be to check out a 3d magazine.  Many vendors offer
complete librarys of skeletal parts, anatomy, etc.

It is for this very reason that I prefer to use morphing as opposed to bones
for the more elaborate stuff.  Not that I have done very much with either of
them, but morphing just seems more straight forward to me.

Gee, that code looks familiar.

Since this is your first Windows code, I'd look hard at the dialog
callback.  Also make sure the dialog template has the WS_POPUP (and not
the WS_CHILD) style.

Dumb questions:  Have you changed the GetModuleHandle() argument to the
name of your plugin?  Have you changed "DialogName" to the name of the
dialog template?  Have you verified that <hdi> and <hinst> aren't NULL?

MSVC is just being picky--it implements type equivalence in a relatively
narrow way.  Watcom, for example, doesn't require a cast.  This isn't
the source of your problem.

I know lwplugin-l is pokey as hell (it takes two or three days for posts
to show up), but we should probably take this discussion there, rather
than frightening all these good people.

In PC LightWave there is no option for choosing the numbered digits as an
extension. So if you have a name that is ""flying", LightWave will make
it "flying001", etc. This is longer than 8.3 and will not save on a DOS
drive that can only take an 8.3 filename (such as a drive connected thru
Novell Netware). Note that LW may make it "flying001.iff" if you choose
that as your output filename format (name001.xxx). If you wish the
numbers to be the extension, you have to name it "flying.", Which is a
bit tricky under NT or Win(non95). You have to place three periods at the
end of the name before Windows will recognize it as a separate character...

Actually, grabbing the frames for a background image-sequence is about as
quick and dirty as you can get.  Of course, it all depends on the
equipment you're using.  With a PAR or PVR, it's just a matter of
recording the video, entering LightWave, and loading the video as a
background sequence.  It gives you the cleanest look for a minimal amount
of work.

The only other way I know of is the way you've already tried, and you know
how that looks.

If you're talking medical forensic (as opposed to legal forensic, like
accident re-creations), check out Issue 21 of 3D Artist magazine.  It's
got 4 great articles on medical illustration & animation...plus a nice
tutorial on budget motion-capture, among other things...

Is anyone aware of any way to save multiple iterations of a mesh in an
automated fashion?....I am working on object meshes(characters) for use in a
real-time game...I planned to break the characters into probably about 12
parts(eg. upper arm, lower arm, upper torso, lower tors...etc) and then
group and animate in Layout. Is there any way to save all grouped objects
in one shot(maybe even as a new object)....I know by saving each object in the
hierarchy as a transformed object I can accomplish what I want but this
would just be a pain considering the amount of tweaking that will be
involved before the characters would be perfected. Any help would be
appreciated...
If the above was confusing this what I want to do in nice broken english :)

1) build the chunks of a guy in modeller
2) group chunks into a guy, and animate in Layout
3) save animated chunks/guy as sequential separate objects or preferrably
   one new sequential object(eg guywalk01.lwo, guywalk02.lwo)

Is this possible? Have I missed something really simple(I do that
sometimes :))......Please, Please help me and save my clicking finger from
RSI due to hitting to save transformed too many times....

PS. If it can't do this does anyone know of a plugin that might, or
would anyone be interested in a plugin that would?

Dave and I have had a bfief discussion of this matter "off-list", and he has
authorized me to 'go-for-it'.  I think his original reticence was more out of
a desire to serve the groups wishes than to limit discussion (sorry for

I think that's because most Windows software is stupid and assumes you
put the right extension on a file, and figures out the file type by that
extension, as opposed to reading the header from the file, which is FAR
less prone to error.

BIG problem here -- if you parent the (ie) lower arm to the upper arm,
rotate the lower arm, then save transformed, the lower arm's now rotation
will be saved, but it's new position will be saved relative to the WORLD,
NOT the upper arm, which would mean you might just as well animate in
modeler.

Here is a question for you:  are you saving a different object for each
different frame of an action?  If you are, the shear amount of storage
makes that horribly inefficient.

I'd push the programers to learn how to load LW scene files (actually,
I'd force them too or I'd quit).  That way you could simply animate your
characters as normal, save the one action (walking cycle, kick, ect.) in
a normal LW scene, and they read it in, load the objects, and animate it
as LW does.  It will result in a MUCH smaller game and will generally be
be better for you and them.

At least, that's how we do it on the game I'm working on...

Well, the problem this time was human error on the part of one of the
garcia.com techies.  This is annoying, but I guess it's better than being
on a listserver that just doesn't work right.

I've received assurances from the garcia.com people that this problem
will not occur again, but I'm sure something else will come up sooner or

This may be dependant on the mail reading software.  For me, the subject is
what the subject is however the To: field is "Multiple recipients of
list...".  This is with the PC version of Eudora...

Might want to check a different e-mail program.

In your original posting, you mentioned that a green-screen chroma key
didn't work. An alpha channel would, but you'll need four VCR's and four
tapes, one for each of the following:

(1) Animation
(2) Alpha Channel
(3) Live background footage
(4) Recorder

Set up Lightwave to save out your Alpha channel as 24-bit. You want it as a
seperate set of files, all on their own. I'm not sure what kind of video
output card you're using, but some don't like 8-bit greyscale images. 24-bit
looks exactly the same, and is a safer bet.

Lay this Alpha animation off the same as you do the main one, except put
them each on a different tape. It would help if both tapes and both
animation start points had the same exact time code. If this is not
possible, add a flash frame followed by ten frames of black BEFORE each
animation begins on their respective tapes. This will allow you to easily
lock them together, even with time codes that don't match.

Since you have a switcher with alpha keying, you are probably familiar with
what to do next. VCR-1 plays your animation, VCR-2 provides the hole cutter,
and VCR-3 runs the background footage. It should make for the cleanest damn
key you ever saw.

I frequently take animations to a couple of clients as IFF files. They use
Dababelizer on their Macs to convert them into Quicktime clips and drop them
into their programs. It's a fairly painless procedure. They first supply me
with a Mac formatted hard drive, which I hook up to an Amiga through
CrossMac. I send the finished files over ethernet, from the Alphas to the Amiga.

AVID is 640x480, square pixels.

I have posted the DEC Alpha version of the BML run-time plugin to my
anonymous FTP site:

This version of the BML run-time plugin is intended only for the DEC
Alpha-based platforms.

Please be aware: THIS PLUGIN HAS NOT BEEN TESTED!  The platform on which
I re-compiled the BML sources did not have LightWave 4.0 Final installed,
so plugins could not be installed and tested.

Because the Windows NT operating system employs little-endian byte ordering
on all platforms on which it runs, scripts compiled on any BML-supported
platform will operate with the run-time plugin on any platform without re-
compilation (i.e., script compiled on the Intel platform will function on
the Alpha without modification).  This means that the existing compiled
scripts in the BML-RT directory should work as-is on the Alpha platform
with the Alpha-based run-time plugin.

SPECIAL THANKS goes to Chris Hanson at Questar for giving me time on his
DEC Alpha to recompile BML.  (Did you find those missing digits, Chris? =|^)

I'm confused--Intel is big-endian, Windows doesn't enforce restrictions
on processor dependencies like byte order, and I can't figure out what
this has to do with running a program.

I know this might sound a little quanky but, har it goes, I'm just working
on 1 game now, however when I'm done I'd like to pursue work in this field
(since there is no sign of another one). Although the work I've done
so far has not been "blistering'ly complicated" nor "fry yer eyeballs" type of
animation...well in fact, *very* little animation (I mostly did stills of
maps,rooms,guns,ships yadda yadda). What do gaming companies look for? This
type of work is vastly different (that I've seen) from TV/FILM. I was lucky
this time, the person needed someone quick, I showed him some sample pictures
and that was it...but the work I've done so far would definiatly not get me
an academy award if you know what I mean...let alone stuff some of it onto
a reel. Any suggestions as to grab a gamer's eye in a reel?

        I have tried that and it seams to work the best so far.

        Now if I only had the a DP/R ( the non-linear end to my Video

The NUMBER ONE best thing you can do that will get you hired is to include
classical animation.  You need to demonstrate the traditional skills like
Squash and stretch but a great looking walk cycle that gives a sense of mass
would do the trick.  The hardest thing for an animator to do is walk a
character so it looks like the feet contact the ground.  When the foot makes
contact the knee needs to give a little so the body appears to conpress a
little and the flesh squashes.

Anything else depends on what the employee is looking for.  I got in because I
made a prison hall scene the camera glided down.  The employer was looking for
castle builders.

The employer was looking for animated characters and hired an artist that had a
lot of traditional human figure drawing skills.

Based on what your email revealed I would pursue the area of environment.
 Backgounds and architecture.  That would include all furnishings of the
environment.  Make a demo tape that shows this off but try to make a story out
of it.  I find interest in demo tapes depends on how engaging they are.
  If the work your pursueing uses realtime 3D objects then you need to make
really low count polygon objects that look great.

Without trying to sound like an uppity know it all, I hope this helps.

That was intentional...as far as I know, none of those messages got
distributed to the mailing list because of problems with ListServ, but
they were archived by hypermail, so I used NetScape to access them via
the Web and forwarded copies of each "lost" message to the list.

I really didn't feel like editing the quote character ">" out of 50 or
so messages, so they appeared to be replies from me...it was a real pain
in the ass to do this, but I figured people would have been more than a
little bummed out if their messages were lost in cyberspace forever.

I posted a warning message to everyone explaining what was about to happen
before I forwarded all of those messages...I guess you didn't read it?

    If I'm following you, the answer is no, you can't save a group of
objects AS AN OBJECT.  What you could do is save the SCENE in various
interations.  Not only is this directly supported, but scene files are much
smaller than objects too.

    You would then use LOAD FROM SCENE to load your object.  (Of course you
would probably want it to be the only object in the scene too.)  You can think
of scenes as meta objects, sorta, using this approach.

    TMK there isn't currently such a PI available.  It likely is possible to
create one.  You would also most likely want to integrate it somehow with the
OBJREP plugins.

I have very recently acquired the Sparks software and am also working
through the tutorials. The way I understand the manual (YES, it could be
written a little better!)is that you need a source for your particles (i.e.,
your particles for the Sparks program have to come from somewhere. An
object, any object with points, will do. So, you load a particle cloud (or
any other object) into Modeler and run the getpoints.lwm . This is where
your particles are obtained from. For instance, if you load a particle cloud
with 100 points in it and run the getpoints.lwm, Sparks will have 100
particles to work with. If you load a cube and run getpoints.lwm, Sparks
will have 8 particles to work with, etc.. If I remember correctly, you also
have to export your particle source (cloud, cube or whatever) to Layout
after you run the getpoints.lwm. Why? I have no idea.

I'm typing this from memory (I'm at work and don't have any of this in front
of me). I hope this helps. If I'm wrong in my reasoning, somebody please
enlighten me.

Hi to all!

Yesterday I thought about using the technique described in Mojo's 'Simple
Space stuff - Cool tricks from Babylon 5' to simulate lasers beams. Try to
find LightwavePro Sep94 (I guess).

OK, I added a nullobject to a ship, I added a row of 4 lights neasr each other
ans parented these to the nullobject. Now, when I move the nullobjects in the
Z axis, the lights are 'fired' from the ship in the direction the ship is
aiming. Everything is fine by now...

The tricky part is to make those lens flares look like a laser beam... I did
turn motion blur on and I did a lot of experiments with the flare's intensity
and dissolve. Actually, I spend MORE time experimenting with the #$%@@ flares
than to set up the rest of the scene (with asteroids, nebulas, stars, 3
ships...)

I can't get the damn thing right! As someone tried this technique and achieved
good results?! Can anyone give me the values you used for the flares
envelopes?!

I think I will be back to my tube/transparent-tube thingy to simulate my
lasers :(

Save your scene with the parental hierarchies set up and then use Load
>From Scene to pull in as many clones as you need.  Make sure you save
your scene with only the objects and lights in it that you want to clone
and when you use Load From Scene, make sure you answer Yes to the "Load
Lights?" requestor.

Save your objects as a scene, you can then load them in with the load from
scene button. That will load all the objects with their hiarchy.

Hi-

I personally think the lens flare trick works on laser blasts better than
laser beams.
If your using LW 4.0 the tube trick for lasers works great if you turn on
the glow feature.  Play with the radius and intensity and it'll look great.
Don't forget to enable the glow in the surface requester and the effects
panel (I always forget to do that).
